The School of Management Studies, Karpagam College of Engineering, organized an enriching industrial visit for its students to Lakshmi Machine Works (LMW), TMD – Unit 1, located at Periyanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore, on the 30th of July, 2025. This visit was planned with the objective of providing students with practical exposure to industrial operations and bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world applications. The event was coordinated by Ms. R. Shivani, Assistant Professor, under the valuable guidance and leadership of Dr. C. Meera, Head of the Department, and Dr. P. Karthigaikumar, Principal of the institution.

Lakshmi Machine Works is a renowned name in the manufacturing sector and holds a leading position in the textile machinery industry. With its roots dating back to 1962, LMW has carved a niche in both domestic and international markets, making it an ideal organization for management students to observe operations in action. The TMD (Textile Machinery Division) Unit 1 is well known for its advanced infrastructure, modern machinery, and commitment to excellence in production.

The visit commenced at 9:00 AM with a warm welcome by the company’s HR and operations team. Students were given an introduction to the company’s history, its product offerings, and its contribution to the Indian textile machinery landscape. This was followed by a guided tour of the manufacturing facility, where students had the opportunity to observe key industrial functions including machining, assembly, testing, and packaging. The layout and process flow were explained in detail, giving students a clear understanding of how raw materials are transformed into high-quality finished products.

During the visit, students were exposed to various industrial practices such as Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and quality assurance systems. The operations team also discussed the use of automation and the importance of precision engineering in the production cycle. The incorporation of sustainable practices and safety protocols was highlighted, showcasing LMW’s commitment not only to quality and productivity but also to employee welfare and environmental responsibility.

The visit proved to be a significant learning experience for all the participants. It enabled the students to visualize the practical aspects of subjects like Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, and Quality Control, which they had previously encountered only in textbooks. The hands-on exposure to ERP systems, inventory planning, and production scheduling added immense value to their academic foundation.

Students actively interacted with the company representatives, posed questions, and reflected on their observations, which led to insightful discussions even after returning to campus. The experience not only enhanced their knowledge base but also instilled in them a deeper appreciation for industrial discipline, teamwork, and process efficiency.

Overall, the industrial visit to Lakshmi Machine Works was a highly successful and memorable event. It fulfilled its objective of imparting industry-oriented education and brought the students one step closer to understanding the dynamics of large-scale industrial operations.
